That is why today, these backboards are made out of a very tough Plexiglas kind of material. Many of these have a plastic coating over top of the hardened material for looks. However, the material is strong, it stands up to weather much better than past generations, and it allows for players to dunk without having to worry about bringing down the entire goal.
